BUMPER crowds enjoyed Upton's biggest and most spectacular water festival ever over the Bank Holiday weekend.

More than 12,000 people attended the Saturday night firework display alone and Sue Walker, chairman of organising committee, said she has never seen Waterside so packed.

"You couldn't put a pin between them. They were backed up past the Star Inn," she said. "It was a wonderful atmosphere. There was no trouble, just good family fun."

Mrs Walker paid tribute to Pepperpot Pyrotechnics, who put on the laser and fireworks display. She said: "I don't know how they do it. We had a lot more lasers this year and the fireworks were better than ever."

Mrs Walker also thanked Milo Dragon Boats for organising the races on Monday, TV celebrities Tim Culley, of Channel 4's Big Brother, who presented the prizes at the dog show on Monday, and Llewela Bailey, of Central News at Six, who formally opened the event. Antiques valuations by Henry Sandon also proved popular, while an illuminated boat parade, decorated umbrella par-ade, children's entertainers and live music added to the fun.

Mrs Walker said she put the festival's continuing success down to the recipe of free, family-based entertainment it provides.

She said she would not like to see the event expand any more when she stands down from her post as chairman next month, although new ideas are always welcome.

Next year's festival funds are already shaping up well after a record bucket collection of £4,400 and a dance and cruise on the MV Conway Castle on Monday that raised £700.
