A REDDITCH mum whose "lazy" son did not regularly go to school has been given a 12-month conditional discharge.

The mum-of-four, who was also ordered to pay £25 costs, appeared before magistrates at Droitwich with her 15-year-old son last week.

Prosecuting, Richard Jones said the teenager had attended 114 out of 176 school sessions between February 18 and July 12, which meant 62 unauthorised absences.

He added: "There was no reason for his non-attendance and his mother felt she was unable to physically get him to school, although she was made aware of the consequences."

The mother claimed she had made every effort to contact the school if her son had not attended and had left messages.

She added: "My son is just too lazy to go to school.

"I get him up but if he chooses not to go to school, I can't drag him there.

"My main priority is that he goes. My six year-old gets up on her own and gets herself to school."

The son said: "I 'll try my hardest to go to school. I have been lazy over the last couple of years.

"I didn't think this would happen, us being here in court, but now it has it's given me the extra push to get myself there.''
