ANXIOUS Spa residents say that a planning meeting, which will decide the fate of the controversial Waitrose development, must be held in Droitwich Spa.

The meeting is due to be held at the Wychavon District Council offices in Pershore at 2pm on Thursday, September 5.

But residents and businesses which would be affected by the proposed store are urging the council to rethink and hold the meeting at a site in Droitwich after 6pm so everyone can attend.

An Action for Droitwich spokesman, a group which is against the current plans, said: "It's ludicrous to even consider holding it there when a big application like this could affect so many people in the town - people should have the opportunity to listen to what the councillors have to say about it."

A Kwik Save spokesman echoed his views adding: "The timing and the venue for this meeting will inevitably mean that the vast majority of those people who live in Droitwich Spa and the surrounding area will find it extremely difficult to attend."

Leader of the Labour group at Wychavon, Councillor Roy Seabourne (Lab - Droit West), said: "I have already asked the chairman of planning and the head of planning if the meeting, and any subsequent meetings, can be held in Droitwich because of the strength of local people's views."

Councillor Margaret Rowley (Lib Dem - Bowbrook) agreed with Cllr Seabourne saying the application would have a fundamental effect on the town and people have the right to hear what councillors have to say.

A Wychavon District Council spokeswoman said: "Options for the meeting are already being considered by the council."
