DEAR EDITOR - I was delighted to read that Droitwich Spa Football Club is returning to play within the town.

It does seem a shame that a town this size cannot boast a decent football ground and club to match.

Nearby towns such as Stourport, Pershore and Bromyard all have excellent football facilities - stands, seats, social clubs, floodlights and so on. I am sure there is potentially more support in Droitwich than in these smaller towns.

Older readers will doubtless remember Droitwich Harp Football Club, whose players were drawn largely from the Irish community in the Albert/Burrish Street areas of the town.

Many of these brawny lads worked in the salt pits or at Copson's Iron Foundry - heavy work that kept them fit!

The clubs colours, as I recall, were green (for Ireland) and blue (for brine), and the club logo showed a harp and a salt cellar. In those days the team changed at the Rifleman's Arms and played on a pitch called Canal Bank, adjacent to the railway sidings.

Several local lads went on to play professionally including Antony 'Acke' Bourne, who enjoyed success with West Bromwich Albion.

Hopefully the day will dawn again when athletic young men from Droitwich graduate to the big clubs after playing for their home-town side. Can't a public meeting be held to consider the formation of such a club for Droitwich?
