MORE than 1,000 people were treated to a feast of rugby at Droitwich Spa Rugby Club's fourth annual ten's tournament last Saturday.

Sixteen teams, including a Fijian and Tongan side, took part in the 10-a-side competition, eventually won by Malvern.

Teams came from Doncaster, Surrey and Wales to compete in the pre-season event at the Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground, in Hanbury Road.

The Fijian and Tongan side stole the show by performing a "Haka" before each of their games and providing entertainment for the children.

Droitwich entered two sides and both played some attractive and fast running rugby.

The Firsts were knocked out in the last four by losing finalists Brynithel who missed out 28-10 to a strong Malvern team in the final.

New Droitwich captain, Simon Mountjoy, was upbeat about the competition and the forthcoming Midlands Four West (South) campaign.

He said: "This is the sort of test that Droitwich needed at this stage after five weeks of solid training on Tuesdays and Thursdays."

He added that with an influx of some new players, pre-season training has been well attended.

After narrowly missing out in the last two years, Droitwich are hoping to continue their success and push for promotion this season.

Droitwich entertain Bridgnorth this Saturday as they further prepare for the new season.
