DROITWICH Spa CC First XI moved up to sixth in Worcestershire County League division one with a four-wicket home defeat of Ombersley last Saturday.

Spa put the visitors into bat and immediately took control, mainly due to an explosive spell of bowling from in-form Mike Rogers.

He and Adrian field contained both openers and they were unable to score at more than a run per over for the first 12 overs.

It was Rogers who took the opening wicket before captain Ian Duggan decided to change the plan of attack and brought on the spin of Mike Gunston and Glen Harrison.

It certainly seemed to work as both Gunston and Harrison picked up a brace of wickets.

Ombersley were really struggling but a late flurry got them up to 180-8 in their 50 overs.

In reply, it was never going to be easy for Spa as fast bowler Zahid charged in with real venom from ball one.

Stuart Bryan and Dave Scott-Walker (41) held their nerve before Bryan was dismissed for 16.

Ombersley turned to spin in an effort to stop the hosts from scoring and managed to pick up the wickets of Hawkins and Gunston.

Spa were looking in command on 127-3 after 33 overs until three wickets fell for no runs.

This brought together Rogers and Steve Walsh who steadied the ship and steered Spa to a well-earned victory.

Rogers finished on a superb 39 not out.
