MALVERN Wizards have won Droitwich Rugby Club's 10s competition for the second season running.

The new fitness regime imposed by new coach Andy Cushing was evident from the first match, as after a delayed start due to the non-appearance of Stourbridge, Malvern blew away Worcester Wanderers by more than 50 points.

The style was set with abrasive fast forward play from the front row of Daniels, Harte and Logan, to the pace from the backs exploiting the wide open spaces this type of rugby gives sides.

The group decider came to a showdown with the Metropolitan Police side, keen on taking some silverware for the day.

Two early tries from established international sevens man Rob Young saw Malvern in an early lead, but the police side hit back straight away.

In a tense second half tries from Blakeway and Beech proved a hammer blow as they went on to score another two and the Mets ambitions faded.

In the knockout stages Malvern were hoping to draw the Fijian outfit the Islanders, but in a disapointing display Droitwich accounted for them, so it was a repeat of last year's final against Doncaster.

Playing an explosive expansive game, the early pressure saw a try from Blakeway, then Richards cut Dave Beech free to gallop in from halfway.

Doncaster hit back, but couldn't match the aggressive defence of Malvern especially from Thomas and Merlin. Spaces started to appear in the tourists' defence which were exploited as Malvern new boy Steve Ironside and Beech sealed a fine win with tries in very hot condtions.

In the final they met Welsh side Brynethnil, who had progressed with a very forward- orientated style of play.

The conditions played a huge factor in a nervous opening. Young scorched in with a fifth-minute converted try, but in a physical encounter Malvern could not get the second score they needed before half-time.

The Welsh side threw everything at the Wizards in the second half but superb defence kept them bottled around halfway for long periods.

They scored when the ball went loose, but Malvern hit back straight away as John Martin broke and put a finely weighted pass into the arms of Young who went 75 yards under the posts to seal victory.

Malvern revert to the 15-a-side version on Saturday against South West One side Cheltenham in a friendly at Spring Lane, in preparation for the following week's Tetley Bitter Cup clash with Old Laurentians.
