HEREFORDSHIRE have won the Minor Counties Championship Western Division title for the first time after a dramatic final day of the season.

They wrapped up a seven-wicket victory over Cornwall at Truro, but then faced an anxious two-hour wait before hearing that title rivals Devon had narrowly failed to beat Berkshire at Torquay.

Herefordshire will now take on Eastern Division winners Norfolk in the overall championship play-off at Luctonians CC, Kingsland from September 8-10.

Cornwall, resuming on 69-5 in their second innings, put up stubborn resistance led by 99 from skipper Tim Sharp, but they were eventually bowled out for 187, Kevin Cooper finishing with 3-59 to equal his County record of 43 wickets in a season.

Herefordshire reached their target for the loss of three wickets, Paul Lazenbury making 33 and Harshad Patel 25.

Phone lines were then red hot to Torquay as Devon were frustrated by a Berkshire fightback and eventually had to reach a target of 201 in only 21 overs. They fell just seven runs short.
