PEOPLE can soon investigate and monitor the way Redditch Council runs following the creation of a new scrutiny panel.

The standards committee will work as a watchdog and members will meet up to four times a year to ensure the council is working properly.

Anyone living or working in Redditch or with an interest in the town is being urged to apply to became an independent committee member.

Director of democratic services Simon Chappell said: "We are keen to talk to people who would like to play an important role in working with the council.

"The independent chairman's role will be to ensure councillors and officers are acting in accordance with procedure and meeting standards."

He added: "We welcome applications from anyone who lives or works in Redditch.

''Applicants must have an ability to look at issues objectively, be able to make decisions on merit and be honest and impartial."

The position is unpaid apart from travel and attendance expenses and applicants must not have any personal connections with councillors of officers.

Briefings and training sessions will be included and anyone wanting to apply can contact Steve Skinner or Christine May on 64252.

Application forms must be returned by Wednesday, August 28.
