MAY I express my outrage at yet another sensless act of vandalism committed on Saturday night, when a banner advertising the Astwood Bank Flower Show was torn down and defaced.
This Royal British Legion event has been held annually since 1946, the profit currently being used to provide small Christmas gifts to local widows.
The history of these gifts relates back to a period after the Great War when the Royal British Legion gave widows of those who gave their lives a gift of a packet of tea or biscuits.
The cost of replacing this banner probably represents 10 per cent of the entire annual profit from the show, but of much more importance is the fact far fewer people will now be aware the show is taking place at 2pm this Saturday afternoon, August 24, in the grounds of Dark Lane Club.
