EMPLOYERS are being called on to develop vacancies to help those who are out of work.

This is the message from Joan Skerry, who has just been appointed district manager for Hereford and Worcester Jobcentre Plus.

Mrs Skerry, aged 46, is now responsible for more than 660 staff in 13 jobcentres and four social security offices across the district.

"The aim of Jobcentre Plus is to help people of working age by providing advice on looking for work and the training opportunities available, plus information on how to access benefits to which they are entitled," said Mrs Skerry.

"In addition, we are encouraging more employers to open up vacant opportunities to jobless people, assisting them to fill their vacancies quickly and effectively."

She said that Jobcentre Plus offers a package which is tailored to needs.

"This could range from putting together a CV or preparing for an interview, to people who are unable to rejoin the labour market, for example through illness. They can assist them in identifying which benefits they are entitled to."
