FLYING Scotsman Graeme Wight junior has proved the master of Shelsley Walsh hillclimb yet again.

Bumper crowds at the historic Teme Valley venue yesterday saw Wight win both rounds of the Tran-X British Hill Climb Championship.

And although he was unable to break his own hill record of 24.85 seconds set at the June meeting, Wight's victories took him back to the top of the championship, displacing Inkberrow's Tim Mason by a single point.

Wight clocked 25.21 seconds in his V6 Gould to win the first top 12 run-off for the fastest cars, Mason having failed to qualify after his Gould lost a wheel on the way up the hill.

Mason hit back to record a time of 25.37 in the second run-off, but Wight coolly beat it in the very last run with the fastest time of the day, 25.16.

Hereford driver Deryk Young finished third in both run-offs in his Dallara.

Excellent weather led to a host of class records being beaten, and attractions included classes for motorcycles and historic Ferraris, and demonstrations by several notable cars, including an MG Rover that competed in the Le Mans 24-hour race this year.

Local drivers were, as usual, well to the fore, with class wins for Martin Stretton of Far Forest, near Bewdley (Vision), super sports cars section; Ian Fidoe from Worcester (Pilbeam), sports libre cars up to 2000cc; Ken Sims from Malvern Wells (MG Metro), sports libre cars over 2000cc; Michael Gallery from Droitwich (Morris Mini), classic saloon cars; and Rob May of Bliss Gate, near Bewdley (Lotus Super Seven), classic sports cars.
