BROADWAY'S Paul Speake battled his way to the quarter-finals of the Yoplait All-England Under 25 Singles at Worthing last night.

Speake opened his campaign with an emphatic 21-10 victory over Kent's Mark Devonshire and then edged out a Nick Welsh from Rover Cowley Club, Oxfordshire 21-20 to reach the last eight.

But there was a shock for the Broadway youngster as Mark Griffiths from the Isle of Wight swooped with an amazing tally of 10 shots over the next four successive ends to reach to brink of victory 20-7.

Speake clawed back two singles but he could not stop Griffiths winning 21-9 to end the Worcestershire player's title dream.

Meanwhile Barry Payne's team from Ross-on-Wye opened their national fours title bid in spectacular style, routing Martin Risby's side from Cirencester.

The teams were locked together at 6-6 after eight ends, then Payne and his club mates Mike Baugh, Ray Jenkins and Jeremy Watkins stormed to a 28-13 success.
