WESTFIELDS Football Club are jubilant following a £126,000 windfall from the Football Foundation.

The grant will allow the Hereford club to relocate to the Moor House Sports Field and, in conjunction with Hereford Sixth Form College, construct a purpose built floodlit community football complex.

Westfields will remain at their Rotherwas ground this term and a move to their new home is planned for the start of next season.

Westfields chief executive Andrew Morris said: "This facility will not only secure Westfields' future for the next 30 years but it will give the Sixth Form College and the community a much needed soccer facility, the type that has been lacking in the city of Hereford.

"It is great news and there are exciting times ahead for the partnership."

Morris added that the club and the college had been working on the bid for more than two years.

Lord Pendry, chairman of the Football Foundation, welcomed Herefordshire's first grant from the country's largest sports charity.

He said: "The grass roots of the game has been under-funded and neglected for too long and I am sure that this scheme will provide a much-needed boost for football in the county."

He added: "We look forward to many more high quality bids from clubs, schools and councils in Herefordshire."

The new facility will include a pavilion, a clubroom, senior pitch, two mini soccer pitches and a senior team training pitch.

Floodlights and a covered seated stand from Westfields' Rotherwas ground will be moved to the new headquarters. In keeping with Football Foundation policy, all facilities will have full disabled access.

The project should also provide a boost for the women's game in Herefordshire.
