July 12 1902

AMY Phillips, of The Parkes, Evesham, was charged with riding a bicycle without a light at Bidford on June 24. She admitted the offence, stating that the candle she had in her lamp had burnt away. PC Sharpe gave the particulars and defendant was fined 2s 6d, the costs being remitted.

July 16 1927

ONE of the most severe and prolonged thunderstorms experienced in the country for many years broke over the greater part of England on Monday afternoon. While there does not appear to have been any personal or material injury caused by the lightning in Evesham, several wireless sets in the neighbourhood were ruined and an oak tree on the Wood Norton estate was split. The whole of Evesham was also without electric light from 6pm on Monday to 7.15am on Tuesday.

July 12 1952

EVESHAM Town Council decided on Wednesday evening to recognise the work done for the benefit of the town by the Royal Engineers at Chadbury Lock by presenting a silver challenge cup to the Corps depot at Long Marston for annual competition by the Sappers' cricket teams. When the proposition had been carried unanimously, the Mayor said the Borough's coat of arms would be placed on the cup with an inscription and arrangements would be made for its first presentation.

AS lettuce prices plummeted to little more than 1p each in the wholesale market this week, and Vale growers were ploughing them back into the ground, shops in Evesham were still asking 8p to 10p per lettuce. But shopkeepers denied that they were making "excessive profits" and said that they could still be left with lettuce on their hands because the cold weather had turned housewives off salads.
