GEORGE Pearson has gained some consolation for just missing out on every bowler's dream by winning our Evening News/Duncan Fearnley Cricket Sales Ltd. Cricketer of the Week award.

The 18-year-old seam bowler took 9-29 playing for Tenbury's second team in a Worcestershire County League clash with Coombs Wood, having earlier struck an unbeaten 67 with the bat.

But frustratingly for him, he was denied all 10 wickets when Coombs Wood's final pair of batsmen blocked out the last five overs - three of them bowled by George - to earn a draw.

However, while disappointed not to bag a clean sweep, he was delighted with the way he bowled, having never taken more than five wickets in an innings before.

He said: "For once I got my run-up bang on and was hitting the off-stump line every time - it was just line and length really, and the fielding was superb. There wasn't one dropped catch.

"I would just have been over the moon if I had got all 10. The whole team were really egging me on and I think even the opposition wanted me to get the last wicket.

"But the last two batsmen blocked everything out. There were catches going over the slips' heads and everything - it was so annoying."

Six of his wickets fell to catches - three of them in the slips - while two were to lbw decisions and the other one was bowled.

George was also pleased with his batting effort, saying: "I have got into the 80s before but this season, that is my best by far. I hadn't done very well with the bat but I was seeing it like a football."

George, who lives in Tenbury and is a student at Hereford Sixth Form College, has played for the club since his early teens and has also represented Herefordshire at junior level.

He wins a £40 voucher to be spent at Duncan Fearnley Cricket Sales Ltd. at Unit 10 Sherriff Street, Worcester.
