I WOULD like to respond to D E Margrett's letter headlined "Excellent .. the time of the euro draws near".

I wouldn't wish to enter into any in-depth discussions nor arguments regarding the pound/dollar/euro but only to advise him of his error in understanding the fundamental statements behind my original letter.

We will, irrespective of our wishes, enter the euro sooner or later. I'm concerned that we will again have inflation similar to that which happened during decimalisation, only this time considerably worse.

The high inflation in both Greece and Germany is purely due to changing over to the euro and nothing else.

Petrol has always been cheaper in Europe than in Britain (at least for 45 years to my knowledge). It isn't down to the strong euro, but simply because subsequent British governments since the 1980s have seen the taxation of petrol as a right little earner!
