THE headteacher of a top Bromsgrove school has slammed the Government for it's over emphasis on judging success through examination results and dishonest spin doctor culture.

Tim Taylor, of Bromsgrove School, in Worcester Road, made the controversial speech at the annual commemoration and prize-giving ceremony, attended by the town's Tory MP Julie Kirkbride last Saturday.

In his speech to governors, parents and pupils, he accused the Government of failing pupils by putting too much emphasis on exam success.

"Genuine education is hindered by excess bureaucracy and an over-emphasis on judging success, by considering and emphasising only that which can be measured.

"In the drive to raise standards, examination and test results have become over dominant indicators of success."

He believes his school strives to provide an all-round education which accepts pupils with varying abilities, aptitudes, interests and backgrounds.

The speech also stressed the importance of loyalty, trust, responsibility and honesty.

Mr Taylor said: "Honesty, I am afraid, is not a quality portrayed by the recent Government, for spin doctoring is a form of dishonesty, concealing or diverting attention from the real truth.

"We must deplore the message this sends to us all, especially the young."

He also criticised recent behaviour among World Cup footballers and scenes from the European Rugby Football Championship where "professional fouls" were deliberately used to win matches.

"True sport relies on trust that participants will play within the rules even when not under the eye of the umpire or the referee," he added.

The headteacher said the school had enjoyed a successful year, academically and in extra curricular activities.

He thanked staff, governors and parents for their dedication and support.
