BANISHING litter, painting signs, pulling down flyposters and repairing benches are just some of the jobs a "Mr Fixit" is tackling in Hereford.

To make sure those areas don't get overlooked, Herefordshire Council, the Hereford City Partnership and Hereford City Council have joined together to appoint the first ever High Town handyman to tackle grim areas of the city.

Alan Jenkins, who began an eight-week secondment to the post last week, will be a permanent pair of eyes in the area to spot anything unsightly and leap into action.

Although different teams from the council are already busy keeping the city centre clean Geoff Cole, Herefordshire Council's head of culture, leisure and education for life said there was always more to be done.

"What we haven't had before is someone who has the authority to cover such a wide range of activities," said Mr Cole.

"For example, one team of workmen for the council is responsible for keeping the city centre litter free, while another team has the responsibility to make sure flyposters are removed."

Since his appointment, Mr Jenkins has been busy repairing benches, painting and tidying up signs and could soon be putting his bricklaying and woodwork skills to good use.

It is hoped residents and tourists alike will be persuaded to continue shopping and returning to the city centre.

"Nobody likes visiting places which are dirty and grimy," said Alison Alsbury, Hereford city promotions and development manager.

"While you could never class Hereford city centre in this category, the creation of this post can only be good news for our businesses and the tourism industry."

If the trial period is successful, Mr Jenkins' post could become permanent.
