SCOTTISH legend Craig Chalmers has backed fellow Worcester Rugby Club star Ben Hinshelwood to shine on the international stage.

Hinshelwood, who made his Scotland debut on Wednesday against Canada East in the first game of a six match North American tour, is on the bench for today's clash with Rugby Canada in Toronto (7.30pm BST).

The 25-year-old, however, could be on the verge of a regular run in the side if he continues his development, according to teammate Chalmers.

The former British Lion has been impressed with the centre's improvement since Christmas at Sixways and believes Hinshelwood has a bright future for club and country.

"He's got a big chance at the moment because I think there is only perhaps one position in the Scotland team which is unavailable and that is Bryan Redpath's," said Chalmers.

"The Scotland team is maybe a little unsettled at present and Ben can certainly take advantage of that. It's up to him to take his chance but I've no doubts that he has the ability to play at that level.

"What is important, however, is that he does himself justice on this tour."

And with the World Cup on the horizon, Chalmers is optimistic Hinshelwood can force himself into contention for a fairy-tale trip back to Australia, the country of his birth.

"He is as keen as mustard," Chalmers added.

"We've spoken about his situation and I've told him that it's important to do the basics correctly.

"What Ben has is a great opportunity and I think the World Cup must be in the back of his mind. If he does well out there on tour and keeps on playing well for Worcester then he must be in their thinking.

"The outside centre battle is an interesting one because you have Ben and Orrell's Andrew Craig vying for that spot. It will certainly be interesting next season."
