MONTHS of hard work and planning came together in an outstanding day-long celebration of the Golden Jubilee in Stoke Lacy on Monday.

The idea of marking the day with an afternoon of Jubilympic Games was the brainchild of villager John Davies, and he seemed to have successfully roped in most of the village to help set up the events.

Despite the showers, a dozen teams enthusiastically took part in the 10 events which made up the Jubilympics, the eventual winners being the team led by Andrew Morris.

The afternoon fun was followed by a huge tea at the village hall, to which again a large part of the village had contributed.

An evening of entertainments, including children's fancy dress, comedy and a community sing-a-long, was opened by John Arnett proposing three cheers to Her Majesty.

The patriotic mood was maintained by The Village Voices, the local choir leading a rousing rendition of Land of Hope and Glory.

A disco run by Geoff Ivision concluded the day.

The event had also been supported by a £5,000 grant from the National Lottery Awards for All fund, which bought a stage and PA system for the village hall and will also pay for the publication of a village history.

The first draft by Janet Parker was available to read during the day.

A raffle and other fundraising efforts on the day helped raise more than £1,000 for the village hall.
