A FULL-SCALE uphea-val of equipment, balloons and PA system could not stop the Malv-ern Wells Jubilee Fun Day on Monday from being a success.

A decision was taken to move everything from Assart's Road to the village hall to avoid the rain in the early afternoon.

"We decided at noon that we would have it in the field, and we started to set it up," said Mike Bowker, of the organising committee.

"But at 1.30pm it started to rain, so we brought it up here."

Fellow committee member Brian Davis said that despite the difficulties they encountered, which included having to untie all the bunting and force around 60 helium balloons into cars to transport them, the day was a success.

"We have had a good turnout, and I think everybody seems to be enjoying themselves," he said.

Parachute games, face painting, and Rebecca the clown twisting animals out of balloons all kept the children entertained.

Sarah Beattie, who had brought her son James, 10, and daughters Gemma, six, and Claire, 12, said she was impressed with the event.

"Gemma's enjoying herself," she said. "It was a shame it rained, particularly for some of the older ones, but it's good that everybody's come out and supported it."

Better weather smiled on the fete at Sherborne Tower Care Centre on Hanley Road the following day.

Pamela Craig, who plays Betty Tucker in The Archers, formally opened proceedings at 2pm.

Stalls, including bric-a-brac, tombola, books and cakes, were set up alongside side shows like Splat the Rat. Teas were organised by the Women's Instit-ute and a raffle was held.

"It went very well," said organiser Barbara Savery.

"Two hundred people visited us, and we sold quite a lot of things."

More than £800 was raised, towards refurbishment of Malvern Wells Village Hall.

On Friday there was a party at Wyche CE Primary School, when staff and students dressed in 1940's costume. Children played games and were presented with a commemorative coin and slice of 'Union Jack cake'. It was organised by the Friends fo the Wyche.
