What a wonderful concert this was! Christopher Lincoln is an operatic singer of some stature, more used to singing major tenor roles in world class opera houses, and Sydney most particularly, than in a local parish church. However, he was staying with friends in West Malvern and he gave his talent magnanimously, to help raise funds for the church roof.

He used his fine operatic voice to great effect but was able to lighten and refine it also to suit lyrical songs. Diction was very clear and his expressions reflected the mood. He coloured his words vibrantly and had a vast range of dynamics at his disposal.

The choice of programme was perfect, each song like a miniature cameo.

David Kershaw was the sympathetic and expert accompanist, having to provide that which an entire orchestra would.

Operatic arias of Verdi and Puccini made a compelling start, sung with superb flexibility and scaling summits of drama.

Among the songs heard were Gilbert and Sullivan's Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes, and a cleverly performed The Fervour of Love Affects My Voice where Christopher's voice gave up every time he tried to approach the lady!

This is my Prayer from The Student Prince was sincere and intimate, and You Are My Heart's Delight was an ecstatic expression of love, while I Will Hold Your Hand In Mine was an amusing burlesque. In Remember Christopher made use of a parlando style and his voice caressed the notes romantically as he sang One More Kiss. Send In The Clowns was performed beautifully. It was so soft, tender and sad.

Maria from West Side Story was sung with amazing control, ending on a superb high soft note. Nessun Dorma, with a brilliant top C was the encore, ending a memorable evening.
