A MINI-roundabout suggested for a quiet country lane brought two dozen objectors to a Powick planning meeting.

An amended plan for five new houses at 21, Bowling Green Road, did not address the previous objections raised by Powick Parish Council, they heard.

Instead it introduced a new bone of contention, a mini-roundabout at the junction of Bowling Green Road and Sparrowhall Lane, striking an urban note in a rural area.

Objectors were worried the development was too big and could set a precedent for developing other sites.

Concerns

They felt there was no need for the roundabout and raised concerns about the possible environmental impact of losing trees and a mixed hedgerow bordering the property.

Chairman John Mason said the planning committee had objected to the replacement of one dwelling with five and he could not see any reason to change their stance.

It was claimed it would bring a huge increase in traffic on the narrow country lane and put extra strain on the sewerage and water supplies, which were not adequate for the increased usage.

Because the development would be at the far end of the lane, the extra traffic would have an impact on everyone else who lived there.

"We didn't say the junction was dangerous, but now for some reason a roundabout has been proposed," he said.

"We have had this junction for hundreds of years and I can't remember any serious accident there."

The chairman urged the public to send their objections individually to the planning department of Malvern Hills District Council, saying that their letters would carry more weight than the comments of the parish council.
