BEN Hinshelwood made his Scotland debut as the tourists ran out 38-8 victors over Canada East in Kingston last night.

Worcester Rugby Club's centre played the full match and was involved in a couple of tries as he impressed on his first start for Scotland.

Hinshelwood was one of eight newcomers to the international scene in the first match of the six-game tour of North America.

And coach Ian McGeechan was delighted with their contribution.

"I thought tonight was encouraging," he said. "It was great to see the youngsters coming into the side and playing well."

Watched by a crowd of 4,126 - that included a vocal group of expats - Scotland led 17-3 at the break.

Gordon Ross' 12th minute penalty set Scotland on their way and the stand-off converted both tries that they secured before the interval.

The first came in 28 minutes when Hogg thundered over on the left after Hinshelwood and Marcus Di Rollo had done the spadework on the right.

Barclay Luke had pulled back a penalty but Scotland ended on the attack and from Philip's belligerent run Walker powered through for the second try.

Graeme Burns kept the scoreboard ticking over at the start of the second-half scutling in from a storming run by Bruce Douglas. Ross converted.

Home prop Kevin Wirachowski crowned sustained driving play with a 53rd minute try and it looked as if full-back Jeff Williams might add a second until Walker chased him down.

Scotland finished with a brace of tries from Di Rollo, Ross again adding both conversions.
