THE streets of London weren't the only ones thronged with people getting into the Jubilee spirit.

Hundreds of people turned out to watch Evesham's very own carnival procession wend its way through the town on carnival day last Saturday (June 1).

More than a dozen floats and others in fancy dress lived up to the theme of the day - the kings and queens of England - as the procession made its way through the streets.

Organisers from the Vale of Evesham Round table were thrilled with the success of the event, which took place in glorious sunshine.

Alan Ayres, from the organising committee, said: "It went very well and was very successful.

"It kicked off the Jubilee weekend quite well I thought."

He said that the event was one of the best-attended for many years. "We had a lot of people turn out and more floats than for several years. Everybody really made an effort and whether that was because it was the Jubilee weekend I don't know."

Organisers were particularly pleased that with so many other events on in and around the town, the carnival was so well-attended.

Mr Ayres added: "The highlight was all the kids on the floats."

The winner of the competition to find the best float was the National Childbirth Trust's Vale of Evesham branch with Sing a Song of Sixpence.

Publicity officer Lynn Ratcliffe said: "It was fantastic and were really chuffed because it was such a last-minute thing. We only had the float just over a week, so it was all hands to the pump."

Elsewhere in Evesham the festivities also went with a bang.

Evesham United's Common Road ground was the venue for a whole host of events during the day, which ended with a concert and fireworks display.
