SAILING sensation Alison Young is to represent Great Britain juniors in the Topper World Championships in August.

The 15-year-old will head to Holland for the big competition after finishing fourth girl in the U-16s at the National Inland Championships in Grafham.

Trimpley Sailing Club's Young, a Ray Mercer grant winner in the past, has been making great inroads into the sport in recent years.

The Bewdley High School pupil was ninth in her section after the first day's sailing in the national event but showed determination to go on and achieve three top 10 overall finishes.

Young, the only girl to achieve a first place at the event, ended the day in 31st out of 244 sailors which included adults and over-16s.

She followed that achievement up by becoming National Schools Sailing Association topper champion after a great performance near Oxford at the weekend.

Once again the only girl to win races among 43 toppers, Young recorded two victories to lead the event.

And a hard-fought second place in the final race earned another title for the 2000 Optimist champion.
