A HOST of events to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee as well as look into sustainable living is to be held in Worcester next month.

The Worcestershire Jubilee Earth Summit, aimed at celebrating the Queen's 50-year reign while looking at global issues such as poverty, conserving resources and protecting the natural environment, is to be staged at County Hall.

As part of the event, visitors will be able to prepare a message which will be sent to world leaders including Tony Blair attending the Johannesburg Earth Summit in August - ex-pected to be the largest international environmental conference ever.

Liz Alston, sustainability officer at Worcester-shire County Council, promised the day - Saturday, July 6 - would include a number of displays and exhibitions.

"There will be lots to see and do during the day," she said.

"Although it has a very serious side, it will be a lot of fun, with plenty of different things for people to do.

"It will also be an opportunity for visitors to see the work that is being done by schools in the county on sustainability, as several are expected to have displays and art workshops at the exhibition."

As part of the day, the council is to turn the clock back to 1952 to compare the quality of life and environment then compared with today.

The event will also include displays of sustainable fuels, recycling and wildlife projects.

There will also be a number of workshops showcasing local ach-ievements in sustainable development as well as lunches made from produce grown in the region.

"There will be some superb food available which has been produced locally," said Ms Alston.

"The day will be a great opportunity for people to find out what is happening in the world of sustainability."

Places, which are free, must be booked in advance with Rosemary Willmore. Anyone interested in attending can call 01905 766723.
