DEAR EDITOR - When my late father was in his 80's he was disappointed at the standard and quality of television programmes yet whilst I am in my 50's I am already appalled by the rubbish I receive on both satellite and terrestrial television.

Former children's programmes, where yelling and screaming contests were the order of the day, have been transposed to evening viewing.

As for Big Brother, if the 12 current specimens are anyway representative, then we should start to worry.

Some seemed surprised that wrong doses are dispensed in hospitals when some students are leaving college with "qualifications" when they can't spell or tell the difference between 1,000 and 100, 000.

Managers are often appointed without even basic educational qualifications let alone managerial qualifications and skills, unlike in Germany and the USA where appropriate skills and qualifications are a pre-requisite.

With some managers who can't spell, add up or manage we should fear for our pensions.

Even if a small number of people are prepared to shout " look the emperor has no clothes " huge PR machines paid for by the tax payers roll out denials before anyone has time to consider the value of the comments.
