DEAR EDITOR - Now that we have a new mayor of Droitwich, it is to be hoped that he will support the people of the town in seeking changes to some of the current plans.

I have been a resident of the locality for over 30 years, and in that time we have seen the demise of Droitwich, which was a nice Spa and market town.

Since Wychavon District Council has taken over from Droitwich Rural, good developments or lack of them have jeopardised our ability to draw in visitors and hold their attention and purchasing potential.

Because of this, interesting shops are few and far between. To stop the decay we need to reverse the trend and make our town a place people want to visit. We therefore need the following:

l A large supermarket on the periphery of the town. Custom is needed here, and their custom not leaked to Worcester or Bromsgrove.

l The lido reopened with the Winter Gardens of yesteryear attached and a caf facility to replace Bullocks incorporated.

l Empty and/or used property like the Worcestershire Hotel and Nellie Copson's, should be re-worked to blend in with their surroundings. We cannot force people to use their property, but we can insist that they pay to stop the establishments looking derelict.

l Stop the building of Waitrose. The council once before approved the building of a supermarket next to another one, Gateway (now Wilkinsons) and Safeway and that was a failure. We need a car park for the Waterside.

l Enlarge the water basin before connecting the canals or a bottleneck will be created and buildings built on the Waterside will hazard later development and its true potential.

l Delete the law on alcohol free zones - the only people this affects are picnickers. Everyone else takes notice, and neither do the Police. Only the law-abiding suffer.

Make your time in office effective, and improve the council's standing.

Stand up to Wychavon and tell them Droitwich is no longer "a cash cow" and that town plans should be approved by the community and not inflicted on them.
