CUTNALL Green CC's suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday as they lost by five wickets at home to Worcester Corinthians.

Following victories over Bridewell, Newland and Brintons in recent weeks, Green fell victim to some impressive bowling.

The result leave Cutnall Green in second place in Worcestershire County League division five, 23 points behind leaders Cape Hill Victoria.

Captain Matthew Harris said: "It was terrible. They had one good bowler and he reduced us to 32-5."

Green lost the toss and were put into bat.

The hosts started well, scoring 17 runs in the first two overs. But the excitement was short lived.

The third over saw the loss of the first wicket, following a sharp delivery from Worcester's S Ali.

Then the wickets began to fall. Consistently good bowling from Ali and A Kadoos kept Green in check and by the 11th over the batsmen had crumbled to 32-5.

Green were looking fragile and were heading for a low score but Phil Bayliss (37) anchored the innings and Green managed to reach 113 all out in the 35th over.

Ali was the pick of the Worcester bowlers as he took 5-22 while Kadoos took a quick 4-19.

With a comfortable target to reach, the Corinthians took their time compiling the runs.

But Cutnall Green did not give up and pegged back Corinthians to keep their score down as well as taking the odd wicket.

Their approach seemed to pay off as Corinthians had struggled to 63-4 by the 29th over.

That was about as good as it got for the hosts as M Haynes(25not out) and T Hussain (52no) scored 54 runs between them in the next four overs.

Corinthians finished on 117 to seal their five-wicket victory.

Harris was Green's top bowler with figures of 3-19.

The defeat is not one Green will want to dwell on but Harris believes the toss is all important.

He added: "We lost the toss, which I don't think helps as the team who loses the toss tends to lose, or that's how it seems.

"We have won three, drawn one and now we have lost this one."
