FRESH musical talent is being sought by the new director of music at a Bromsgrove church to encourage young people to play the organ.

Paul Charman, who was appointed director of music at St John's Parish Church, in Kidderminster Road, in January, is setting up a new organ scholarship scheme in a bid to get young people to learn to play the instrument.

The new Joyce Messenger memorial organ scholarships are aimed at youngsters aged 11-18 who play the piano or keyboard and would like to learn to play the organ.

Organ scholars will receive free organ tuition, a small bursary and will gain experience of playing the organ for services at St John's.

Paul said: "The organ scholarships at St John's will provide an exciting new opportunity for talented young musicians in the Bromsgrove area to learn this great instrument."

"There has been a steady national decline in the number of organists in recent years and we hope that the scholarships at St John's will help provide a future generation of young organists."

The strong music tradition at St John's includes a choir of 15 adults and 25 junior members.

In March this year, the choir sang at Birmingham Cathedral, and next year they will sing at St Paul's Cathedral in London.

Anyone interested in applying for the organ scholarships should call the parish office at St John's Church for an application pack and further information on 01527 878801.
