TWO members of Bromsgrove Youth Organisation met with a tragic accident while canoeing on the lake at Hewell Grange, Tardebigge. The youths, John Hollis, aged 17 from Churchfields and Brian Jones, 18, from Broad Street, Sidemoor, were members of the club's canoeing group which was holding its first outing of the season.

AN open-air boxing tournament at the Victoria Ground to raise money for cash-strapped Bromsgrove Rovers fell foul of the weather. Only a handful of the 1,000 who had been expected to turn up braved the rain and the receipts barely covered expenses.

THE annual schools' music festival culminated in a concert at Watt Close School in Bromsgrove with more than 1,200 children taking part. The county music advisor Mr A Benoy was the conductor.

THE latest batch of 18-year-old youths, numbering around 50, were to sign on for their National Service at the Labour Exchange in Bromsgrove on Saturday. In the past one in ten had failed to turn up on the correct day.

THERE was still an unacceptably long list of residents waiting to be connected to the telephone system, Hanbury's annual parish meeting heard. This was causing hardship to many, especially the farming community. The parish clerk, Mrs Wheelton, was instructed to write to the telephone company to take the necessary steps.
