PRISONERS in Russia could get a fairer deal with the help of a prison watchdog from Blakenhurst Prison, near Bromsgrove, who is on a top-level visit this week.
Tricia Bradbury, who is chair of the Board of Visitors at Blakenhurst and is also chair of the West Mercia Probation Board, is one of five representatives on a top-level trip to Moscow, which started on Sunday and runs until Saturday.
The prison experts will visit jails in Russia and talk to Russian government ministers about the role of the boards of visitors, the independent watchdogs who monitor how jails are run here in the UK.
"In this country, prison staff are closely questioned as a protection for prisoners and it will be interesting to see how this form of human rights will be accepted for operation in Russian prisons," Mrs Bradbury said before she went to Moscow.
