FACTORY workers Doris and George Weaver set the wheels in motion for a lifelong happy marriage after meeting at Longbridge in 1939.

Now the couple are celebrating 60 years of together ness at their diamond wedding celebrations.

Doris, aged 80, and 83-year-old George, spent all their married life in Gibb Lane, Catshill, before moving to sheltered accommodation in nearby Oak Apple Court, in Acorn Road, two years ago.

"I was working in the wages office when we met. I was 17. I suppose it could have been love at first sight. Whatever it was, it's certainly lasted and we've been very happy together," said Doris.

George worked as a tool setter at the time, when the factory was producing cars like the Austin 7. He was a foreman at the car plant when he retired more than 20 years ago. During the war, he became a sergeant in the Military Police.

"I don't think it really hit me that it had been such a long time," Doris said. "It's all a question of love, understanding and supporting one another."

The couple have three children and four grandchildren who gathered together to congratulate them on their diamond day last week.
