BROMSGROVE CC First XI defied their dismal league form to claim a memorable scalp in the National Club Championship third round on Sunday.

Despite losing their fifth game in a row at home to Kenilworth Wardens on Saturday, the Boars dug deep, including a century from Nick Davies, to beat former champions Old Hill by 68 runs.

Boars captain Nick Husbands said: "Old Hill paid the ultimate penalty for taking us lightly.

"They seemed to expect us to roll over and give them the game, but the lads did me proud."

At St Godwalds Park, Bromsgrove, who mustered only 114 runs 24 hours earlier, showed scant regard for Old Hill's third place in the Birmingham and District premier as they dominated the tie.

Batting first, Nick Davies and Simon Keyte showed no mercy to the Old Hill bowling, which included Worcestershire's Nathan Round. The pair put on a massive 153 for the first wicket in just 30 overs.

Davies was finally out for 105, an innings that included four sixes and ten fours.

Keyte, supported by Paul Duffy (19), continued the domination and, on 95, fell just short of a centurty of his own.

In reply, Round (20) was caught by Court from Husbands before Davies removed a wicket to leave the visitors struggling at 33-2.

The introduction of off spinner Kish Patel (3-23) put the halt on any chance of an Old Hill recovery. Catches by Duffy, Max Brown and Barry Hope ensured the wickets continued to fall and the runs dried up.

Jamie Campbell (3-38) also joined in to leave Old Hill in tatters at 101-8 after 28 overs.

With the game effectively won, Bromsgrove tried hard to finish it off but resistance and unorthodox hitting by Parkes (44), supported by Brooker (30), ensured the game made it to 45 overs.

Husbands added: "Nick Davies is a big match player and again came up with the goods and I was really pleased for Simon Keyte. He's struggled a bit this season but he really came through and showed his class.

"It just shows what we can do and we just need to relax a little in the league and we'll be ok."

Bromsgrove now face a wait to see who they will play in the regional semi-final this Sunday at St Godwalds Park.

On Bank Holiday Monday, Bromsgrove used their new confidence to win by 101 runs at Bedworth and move off the bottom of Birmingham and District Premier League division one.

Play started an hour late due to rain and the match was reduced to 48 overs a side.

Husbands lost the toss and was asked to bat first. Keyte (18) and Davies (28) put on 35 for the first wicket.

Warwickshire leg spinner Joshi reduced Bromsgrove to 59-3. Richard Barnes was also on form, timing the ball well to produce a majestic 54.

Supported by Paul Duffy (27), the pair took the score to 133, providing the perfect platform for a large total.

John Duffy (12 not out) and Julian Court (21no) took the score to 187-6 in the Boars' allotted overs.

The Bedworth reply was erratic but it took the visitors 13 overs to take a wicket when Davies removed Spacey (8). Husbands took Dutta (2).

This sparked an incredible collapse that saw all ten wickets fall in just 23 overs. Patel continued his good form with 4-14. Husbands returned figures of 3-34.
