DROITWICH Spa boxers highlighted their talent with a showpiece tournament at Wychbold Royal British Legion.

Nine boxers from Droitwich Amateur Boxing Club featured in the tournament on Friday, May 31.

Bout after bout had the crowd on their feet as the action swayed one way and then the other but the two most outstanding contests featured the Bonehill brothers, Anthony and Marc.

Anthony, aged 16, lost a majority verdict to Welsh champion Paul Davies but 15-year-old Marc defeated Seamus King (Ironworks, Birmingham).

Anthony took the first round against a strong opponent with some delightful boxing, which mixed aggression with skill.

Davies clawed it back in the second and the third was on a knife edge to the final bell.

Marc and King had a real battle in their first round, both attacking. But in the second and third rounds, Marc showed his maturity by picking his shots and moving skilfully, keeping King under pressure.

Droitwich's national schoolboy champion Michael Pardoe, aged 15, secured a double over the Ironworks club when he saw off old rival Daniel McDaid on points.

Pardoe took the first round before McDaid came back in the second, only for Pardoe to put the result beyond doubt with a storming third.

Light middleweight 20-year-old Matt Greening found Thame's Ben Underwood difficult opposition.

He had Underwood in trouble early on. The second round was close but Underwood got stronger in the third and won on points.

Middleweight Todd Reeves, aged 19, found himself up against the strong and powerful Kevin Phelan (Slough).

Reeves had difficulty keeping him at bay and Phelan's body shots forced Reeves to retire after a standing count in the third.

Spa newcomer Andy Ogden, aged 14 (above, right), romped to a convincing points victory over the experienced Ryan Shakespeare (Lions, Pensnett).

And other recent additions to the Droitwich stable also showed promise.

Fourteen-year-old Adam Mytton stretched his unbeaten record to four bouts with a hard fought win over Dale Kenny (Triumph, Coventry). Mytton's fast and unorthodox style secured him the verdict in his hardest battle to date.

Sean Donnelly celebrated his thirteenth birthday with one of the best performances of the night, taking a convincing points decision from Luke Straw (Eastwood, Notts).

Donnelly proved too skilful, fast and determined for Straw, underlining his exciting talent.

Sam Gorman, aged 13, left it too late against Zac Bowden (Shrewsbury Severn-Side). In a scrappy contest, Gorman received a warning for holding. He settled into his stride in the third but lost on points.
