WHAT is arguably the most patriotic street in Worcester lived up to its reputation with a spectacular Jubilee street party.

Party organisers in Pinkett Street, off Ombersley Road, had to turn revellers away yesterday because there was too much demand.

"The party is just for residents and their families," said one of the organisers, Sandra Smith.

"When we were organising it we had people from outside who wanted to come, but we had to turn them away."

Even in the rain, party-goers were dancing with umbrellas and taking part in a variety of activities including a knobbly knees and sexy ankles competition.

After a tea for 75 children, there was a barbecue and disco.

Pinkett Street has thrown parties to mark the Coronation and Silver Jubilee. Mrs Smith has been to all three.

"I can't remember the Coronation because I was very young," she said.

"But the Silver Jubilee was different. We're definitely the most patriotic street in Worcester."

Barbourne's Sunnyside Road boasted its own sizeable street party with residents enjoying the festivities as the sun came out at about 4.30pm.

"There are about the same number of people and the spirit is the same as in 1977," said Jan Tovey, who organised the road's Silver Jubilee bash.

Another organiser, Sarah Ball, said residents had raised £650 to hold the party.

"It's a community sort of thing where you get to meet your neighbours," she said.

As the day wore on and the weather improved, parties got into full swing around the city.

"I celebrated the Silver Jubilee with a street party in Brickfields, but I think there's less enthusiasm this time," said Allan Poyner, community worker at Tolladine Community Centre, Rowan Avenue.

"It's brought people out today, but we hope a lot of them will come out for today's event."

The parent and toddler group was planning a fun day today.
