THIS time next week, two residents of Diglis will be soaking up the sun on their honeymoon.

But before flying out to the Indonesian island of Bali, Sam Merchant and Phil Schiaffino made sure they had dressed up to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

The couple were joined by other revellers from Mill Street and surrounding roads who donned fancy dress for yesterday's street party.

Sam dressed as a Greek goddess while Phil clad himself in a dress and heels.

"I hope he won't be wearing the dress next week," said Sam.

"My shoes are killing me and I haven't shaved my legs - but we're going away on honeymoon so it wouldn't have been wise," said Phil.

The residents of Diglis teamed up to organise the street party, which was held at The Alma Inn and down Willow Street.

"It's taken six months of planning," said Mill Street resident Jackie Smith.

"The biggest problem was raising the money to pay for the band and everything else."

Lin Hyde, who also lives in Mill Street, was discharged from hospital on Sunday so she could take part in the fun and games.

"I couldn't miss this, it's been lovely," she said.

"All the youngsters have helped us organise it, they've done really well," said Joyce Morrison, landlady at The Alma Inn.
