THE original signed manuscript of one of Sir Edward Elgar's most popular pieces of work has returned to Worcester.

The manuscript of Salut d'amour, which was written by the composer in 1888 as a gift for his future wife Caroline Alice Roberts, was bought by the Elgar Foundation at auction on Friday, May 17.

The unique score has paste-overs with the composer's handwriting in pencil showing where he changed his mind about the piece.

It is hoped the manuscript, which was bought by the foundation for £15,000, will be on display at the Elgar Birthplace Museum in Lower Broadheath for the anniversary of the composer's birthday this Sunday.

Catherine Sloan, museum director, said she was thrilled to have the manuscript of one of Elgar's best-loved pieces to add to its collection.

The purchase was funded by jointly by foundation chairman David Bowerman and the Resource/V&A purchase fund.
