WORCESTERSHIRE WIs will be celebrating the Queen's Golden Jubilee with a theatrical spectacular in Worcester next month.

Fifty Golden Years is a revue written by and starring members of the county's 155 Women's Institutes.

It looks back to the days of ration books and the Queen's coronation, through to the present day, the age of credit cards and wi.com.

"We felt that we wanted to do some celebration and thought that perhaps a revue through the ages would be apt," said Jean Kennedy, publicity officer for the county federation.

"There's singing and dancing and amusing little skits, and one or two reminisces."

Ms Kennedy said that rehearsals for the show at the Swan Theatre had been going very well. She added the show would appeal to the public and not just WI members.

"Obviously members will want to be reminded of what happened and look back, but also it's something for everybody. It's not a purely WI thing."

As well as featuring around 70 members of the WI in the show, the voiceover will be provided by Bill Maynard, better known as Greengrass from ITV's Heartbeat.

The production plays on Friday, June 21, and Saturday, June 22, at 7.30pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets are £7.50, available from the box office on 01905 27322.

Prior to Fifty Golden Years at the Swan will be the children's musical The Owl and The Pussycat Went to See..., playing from Thursday, May 30 until Saturday, June 8. Since it's premiere at the Swan in 1968 the play has become something of a classic, with half a dozen London Christmas seasons, two nationwide tours, repertory production and numerous amateur stagings.

Ticket prices start at £5, available from the box office on 01905 27322.
