SYDNEY Olympic modern pentathlon gold medallist Stephanie Cook presented county youngsters with prizes at the popular Worcestershire Youth Games.

More than 800 children took part in the fourth annual sports extravaganza held at Stourport Sports Club.

All six districts in the county - Worcester, Malvern Hills, Redditch, Bromsgrove, Wychavon and Wyre Forest - competed, and there were also awards for fair play.

The event is team-based with athletics, hockey, netball, tennis, rugby, basketball and football categories.

Wychavon proved the most successful district with five victories, followed by Redditch with four, Wyre Forest with two and Worcester with one.

Malvern Hills were runners up in the mixed tag rugby and took five fair play awards.

The Broadheath Primary School tag-rugby team who represented the Malvern Hills District rose to the occasion to put on a great display of running rugby.

In their opening match against Bromsgrove, the Broadheath side forced the opposition into making a number of unforced errors and were winners by 9-7.

They then demolished the hosts from Wyre Forest 9-5 before their winning run was broken by Worcester, who won 7-2.

The Broadheath team spirit then came to the fore as they bounced back to defeat Redditch 5-2 and then in their final match against Wychavon, for the runners-up spot, they won 9-7 in a splendid game.

Speaking at the end of the tournament, Malvern RFC youth rugby coach, Gary Tolley was delighted with the team's performance.

He said: "I am really impressed with Broadheath's attitude and team spirit throughout the competition and although they often face bigger and sometimes older opposition, the children showed that good ball skills, strong running and the use of space will always win tag-rugby matches.

"The children from Broadheath thoroughly deserved their runners-up place, which is the highest a tag-rugby side from the Malvern Hills district has ever achieved at the Worcestershire Youth Games.

"I shall be interested to see if the Broadheath team can again rise to the occasion to win the Malvern Hills District Tag-Rugby Festival on Tuesday, June 11 at Malvern RFC."
