WORCESTER St. Johns Christine Dring completed her Cancer Research charity bike ride from Lands End to John O'Groats at the weekend.

Dring, supported by husband Doug, himself a keen cyclist, and sons Steve and Paul, two of Worcester's top racers, completed the 925-mile ride in 13 days.

Despite living in a cycling household, Christine has not previously been a regular bike rider, making her feat all the more impressive.

Initially she intended to complete the ride last year, but broke her leg in an accident at home just days before she was due to set off.

"The first few days were the worst as we had a headwind," she said.

"I seemed to get stronger as I went along and really enjoyed Scotland, where the wind got behind me. I even managed 101 miles in the penultimate day!"

Christine's efforts have so far raised around £2,500 and she thinks the final total may be over £3,000.

The first 25-mile Tuesday evening time trial of the season was run off in strong winds and driving rain, but six hardy souls still turned out to compete. Tim Wood was well under the hour mark with 58-34. Adrian Bird managed 1-1-56 for second place with veteran John Callaghan in third with 1-4-00. Best of the rest was Carl Burnell (1-8-41), Steve Potter (1-9-28) and Mick Potter (1-9-36).
