HEREFORD'S Paul Kaye and Paul Woodward enjoyed some fine catches at the Embassy Challenge in Spain but just finished outside the prizewinners.

Kaye and Woodward, who both compete for Fox Match Hereford, finished below the money list in eighth place with 55 points after lying in seventh with 29 after day one of the event on the River Ebro and Riba roja Reservoir.

They were competing in their second Embassy Challenge final after finishing 37th in Denmark four years ago.

On day one, Woodward, on a section on the reservoir, was 12th with 1.240kg while Kaye, on the river, fished superbly to win his section and score the maximum 20 points with a carp haul of 11.900kg.

On day two, Woodward, now pegged on a river section, was eighth with 1.980kg and Kaye was also eighth in his group on the reservoir with 0.440kg. With the top six pairs taking prizemoney, the duo just missed out.

"It was disappointing to just miss a share of the cash but we still had a great time -- it was a terrific trip and everyone looked after us well," said 32-year-old Woodward.

Twenty-four-year-old Kaye added: "I had a great first day and landed some very good fish. We finished much higher than we did in 1998 -- let's hope we can qualify again next year. It was an excellent trip."
