A ceremony to name a peak on the Malvern Hills will be at the heart of Golden Jubilee celebrations planned by the Conservators.

Chairman Richard Graves will formally christen a previously anonymous peak as Jubilee Hill on Saturday, June 1, at 11am.

"While this will be an informal event, members of the public are most welcome to join us," said spokesman John Tretheway.

The hill is situated at the top of Jubilee Drive - itself named in honour of Queen Victoria's half-century 115 years ago - between Perseverance Hill to the north and Pinnacle Hill to the south.

Two days later, a 15ft Jubilee bonfire will be lit at 10pm at the top of the Worcestershire Beacon, as one of a chain of bonfires across the country. The event is scheduled to end at midnight.

Mr Tretheway said: "For health and safety reasons, our bonfire is not allowed to be as large as the 60-footers of the past. However, it is intended to be suitably impressive.

"English Nature had to be consulted and has given permission for us to hold the event, while advising us on the sort of materials that should be used.

"Erection of the bonfire will be carried out by Conservators' staff, who have been saving wood for this purpose for many weeks."

The event will be stewarded by the Conservators, Air Training Corp, Army Cadets and volunteers. St John Ambulance members and firefighters will also be on hand in case of emergencies.

Mr Tretheway is appealling for visitors to bring a torch and come on foot.

He said: "If you do use your car, please don't block accesses that might need to be used by the emergency services or nearby residents."

Mr Trethaway said there would not be any additional events such as fireworks, parades or collections on the beacon that day.

"We intend to have just one good bonfire with three cheers for Her Majesty the Queen," he said.
