GRASS track motorcycle racing is to return to the Three Counties Show next month for the first time in 13 years.

The sport was last seen at the show in 1989, when it attracted thousands of spectators.

Organiser John Banner is confident that its return - along with sidecar racing - will be just as popular.

The event will be held outside the main arena, which is too small to accommodate it. Instead, it will takes place in a field next to the showground with the Malvern Hills as a spectacular backdrop.

"I'm very pleased it's back on," said Mr Banner.

"You could not get a better setting for a race meeting anywhere. It's brilliant.."

The event is being organised by the Howsell Road-based Malvern and District Motorcycle and Light Car Club.

Mr Banner paid tribute to club chairman Phil Rodway, who helped negotiate the events resurrection with the Three Counties Agricultural Society.

A record £2,700 is being offered in prize money over three races - a pre-750cc solo event, a solo race where engine size is unlimited and an event for 500cc sidecars.

Races will start at 5pm on Sunday, June 16, after an hour's warm-up. Anyone affiliated to the Auto-Cycle Union can enter by completing a form available from Mr Banner on 01684 569285. Forms must be completed and returned to him before midnight on Saturday, June 1.

Admission to the event will be allowed with an £11 show ticket purchased for the day, or a £3 ticket which will allow entry to the showground after 3pm.

Three Counties Agricultural Society spokeswoman Sharon Gilbert said the society was pleased to have the motorcycles back.

Events involving them in the main show arena had only been stopped because they dug it up and caused problems for prestige horse events that followed.
