THE former vicar of Hampton, Evesham, Richard Meyer has been ordained a deacon in the Roman Catholic Church.

Since leaving Hampton, Mr Meyer and his wife Jan have been heads of house at St Mary's School, Ascot, where they had 60 girls to look after and he taught religious studies for GSCE and philosophy of religion for A level.

"It was a full and rewarding time," he said, "but there was an emptiness still where the priesthood had once been. I talked it through with my Bishop and in the end we applied to Rome for permission for my ordination to the Catholic priesthood under special arrangements for former Anglican clergy. The Pope gave that permission early in the New Year."

Mr Meyer is to be ordained priest by the Bishop of Plymouth on Saturday, September 14, serving as chaplain to St Antony's- Leweston, just outside Sherborne in Dorset.

He said: "Jan will be one of that rare breed - the wife of a Catholic priest. She has been wonderfully supportive, as always."
