CASTLEMORTON mountain bike riders Belinda Flattery and Andrew Tarling scored their second victory of the season in round three of the National Trailquest League on Exmoor last weekend.

National League Trailquest events are five-hour mountain-bike orienteering competitions testing off-road cycling and navigational skills.

The series of events making up the National League are held at venues throughout the United Kingdom.

Belinda and Andrew finished first in the Mixed Team event in a time of 4 hours 59 minutes, scoring 370 points, the fourth-highest score in any category.

Belinda said: "We were really surprised how well we scored, we thought we'd had a bad day; we lost time through punctures and then managed to get lost in a forest as well!"

This was their second win of the season in the National League, following their victory in the first round at Coniston.

The Trailquest format sets competitors a maximum time to visit as many of 30 checkpoints as they can and return to the start. Points are deducted for every minute taken over the set time. Precise timing and navigation are needed to make best use of the five hours.

Andrew said: "I think our time-keeping is getting better, but we were cutting it a bit fine today, we made it back to the start with 10 seconds left of the five hours. I don't think we want to get any closer than that!"

The next event in the series will be held in the Peak District at the beginning of June.
