SEVEN hundred and fifty-eight sugary treats from the ovens at Cook's Bakery were consumed last week by customers hungry to raise money for a children's charity.

The Old Street business was one of hundreds of small, independent bakeries taking part in National Doughnut Week, by donating 6p from each doughnut sold to Save the Children.

Co-owner Sue Russell said that staff had cooked up some new varieties, including toffee and custard, to help entice people to buy them.

Although sales did not go through the roof, she said customers did buy more than usual - and Save the Children is now £50 better off because of them.

"We had people who would come in and buy a doughnut particularly to support doughnut week," she said.

"Hopefully, collectively it will have raised a lot of money."
