A VIDEO chronicling a forgotten era of steam trains travelling the last main lane to be built to London has just been released by railway enthusiast Michael Clemens.

Mr Clemens, who owns electrical shops in Upton-upon-Severn and Malvern, has put together footage of steam locomotives on the Great Central Railway four decades ago.

Great Central Remembered was made from a massive archive of 8mm cine film taken by his late father, Jim, before the line was closed to cut costs. It is the latest in a series of videos released by Mr Clemens.

"When Dr Beeching was looking for economies in the 1960s, most of this impressively-built railway was closed," explained Mr Clemens.

"Today, in the era of privatisation and competition, there is talk of re-opening the route - how times have changed over the past 100 years!"

The video journey starts in Marylebone and takes in once-great railway stops such as Woodford Halse and Nottingham Victoria, which is now a shopping centre.
